Product description:The systemic abnormalities in copper metabolism occurring in hepatolenticular degeneration and their significance in the pathogenesis of the disease have been discussed in recent reviews. In the central nervous system, specifically, the copper proteins present in normal brain and in brains of cases of hepatolenticular degeneration with greatly elevated copper content have been investigated along several lines described in previous reports. Three different copper-containing fractions have been separated under copper-free conditions from both normal brain and brains from cases of hepatolenticular degeneration. The major portion of the copper both in normal human brain and in brains of cases of hepatolenticular degeneration has been extracted in the water-soluble Fraction I in a form undialyzable at alkaline pH. Cerebrocuprein I, a green brain protein containing copper, has been isolated from Fraction I obtained from bovine brain and from normal human brain.
