GW1516, also known as GW501516, is a potent PPAR beta/delta activator. PPARs are a type of nuclear hormone receptor that act directly at DNA, much like anabolic steroids. PPAR alpha activators have long been commercialized and are used as cholesterol medications such as fenofibrate. PPAR gamma activators reduce plasma glucose by increasing glucose entry into adipose tissue. Avandia and Actos are two fairly selective PPAR gamma activators on the market.
